Rehoming

We currently re-home around 2000 unwanted, stray and abandoned dogs and cats a year but are always looking for good homes for our residents, are you looking for a new pet?

If you are considering rehoming a cat or dog please consider the following:

Giving a home to a rescue animal is one of the most rewarding experiences a person can have. However, it is important to know and feel that you are ready to take on the commitment of a pet, a pet that will be totally dependent on you for up to 15/20 years. Many people give little thought to the most suitable type of dog or cat for them and then have no option but to abandon him at a rescue centre when they are unable to cope. Owning a cat or dog doesn't always come naturally. You must be prepared to dedicate time and patience to training your dog. Dogs who are untrained or not mentally stimulated often develop behaviour problems, such as destructiveness or barking when left alone. You will also need to consider the cost of veterinary treatment, routine flea and worm prevention, yearly vaccinations, boarding kennel or cattery fees, food and grooming.

Rehoming Criteria

If you are interested in rehoming one of our animals you will be asked some personal questions and be interviewed by one of our experienced Rehomers. The rehoming team will help you choose the dog or cat that best suits you and your situation. A home Visit will then be arranged prior to you taking a dog or cat.

Please note that you have to be over 21 to rehome a dog or cat from us.

We rehome animals within the Devon and Cornwall area only.

We do not rehome animals to any ladies who are pregnant.

All members of your family that will be living with the animal will need to come in and spend some time with the cat or dog.

If you live in rented accommodation, or housing association property, you will be asked for proof of permission to keep pets from your landlord.

DOGS

A vast majority of the dogs we take in are strays, and we therefore have no background information on them. Unfortunately we do not allow any dog that comes in as a stray to be homed with a family that includes children under 10. Dogs that come in as unwanted pets, with previous experience of children, can be rehomed to children under 10.

If you are interested in rehoming one of our dogs you must have a secure garden for sole use only. We don't rehome any dog to properties that have shared gardens.

Unfortunately we do not rehome dogs to upper storey flats, only ground floor flats with access to a secure garden/yard.

CATS

We only home kittens in pairs to families that don't have cats already, or a single kitten to a family with a young cat/ kitten already.

We only home cats as indoor only if they come into Gables Farm as indoor only.
